why-races-matter-imageThe Katie McBurnett 5K on September 12 will be the third race in Madison, and the fourth race we’ve organized. Over the past three years, we’ve expanded what we do with the money we raise, and we’ve evolved Remember Katie Donate Life into something bigger than we ever imagined. The best part is that we intend to keep growing!

After our first race, we raised enough money to purchase 260 Cough Buddy bears. With those bears, we were able to donate to Riley Hospital for Children at I.U. Health in Indianapolis, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent in Indianapolis, Kings Daughters Health in Madison, and Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus. We are also going to be donating another set of bears to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville this month. These things are all very exciting for us — the more hospitals we work with, the more people we can help.

I strongly believe that Katie would be absolutely honored to be helping people at five different hospitals. I know that she would be so happy with our newest endeavor — the Katie McBurnett Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2016 to a student who has received a transplant. When Katie was looking for a way to pay for her time at Hanover College, she was unable to find any sort of scholarship like this in the Midwest. We are excited to be able to provide whatever we can to our scholarship recipients.

With your help, we are able to touch the lives of so many people every year. You can register for the Katie McBurnett 5K here. Registration is $20 until September 1, and $25 after September 1. Prices include a t-shirt.

We hope to see you on race day!
